MANCHESTER UNITED have denied claims manager Louis van Gaal offered his resignation in the wake of the 1-0 defeat to Southampton.
Reports this morning said the Dutchman spoke to United chief executive Ed Woodward about his future after the defeat.
He was apparently persuaded to return to his homeland by Woodward to consider his position with his family.
However a source at United has denied the claims and Van Gaal has returned to Manchester and is expected to take charge of first-team training today.
Van Gaal admitted on the weekend that he had failed to meet Manchester United fans' hopes.
He said: "I’m very disappointed I cannot reach the expectations of the fans.
"They have, or they had, great expectations of me, and I cannot fulfil them, so I am very frustrated."
United are in fifth place in the league, five points off the top four and ten behind leaders Leicester.
They have won just three of their last 13 matches in all competitions and haven't scored in the first half of a match at Old Trafford since September.
United next face an FA Cup fourth-round trip to Derby County on Friday before a home match with Stoke City on February 2.
