LOUIS VAN GAAL has bizarrely claimed that Mike Dean made Chris Smalling 'heavyweight champion' when he awarded Newcastle a penalty in his side's 3-3 draw at St James' Park.
United were leading 2-1 when Smalling was caught grappling with Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Though Mitrovic appeared to have his hands on Smalling's neck, Dean didn't hesitate in pointing to the spot.
Mitrovic converted the penalty, and while Wayne Rooney looked to have won the game with a curled effort, Paul Dummett struck late on to secure a point.
And Van Gaal bemoaned Dean's decision to award the Magpies a penalty.
"Then there was the heavyweight wrestling match between Mitrovic and Smalling, you can see Mitrovic pushing his head down and then you have to decide who is heavyweight champion," Van Gaal said.
"And Dean decides Smalling is the heavyweight champion."
United now sit in sixth spot in the Premier League table following West Ham's 3-1 win over Bournemouth.
