Sam joined Schalke from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 for £1.9m but he's found opportunities in Gelsenkirchen limited since Andre Breitenreiter replaced Roberto Di Matteo as manager in the summer.
Eintracht Frankfurt were close to signing Sam in the last transfer window but he failed a medical, leaving him in exile at Schalke who deem him surplus to requirements.
 
Sam has made just two appearances this season in the Europa League but a switch from the Bundesliga to the Premier League could reignite his career, with Klopp eager to boost his depleted side at Anfield.
Joachim Low selected Sam for his provisional 30-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but he just missed the final cut for the Germany team that went on to become world champions.
