DANIEL STURRIDGE has suffered “some problems” which have prevented him from repeating training sessions and delayed his latest Liverpool comeback.
Manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that the England striker has endured more difficulties in trying to build up his fitness during a mini pre-season and kick-start his stalled career.
Sturridge tweeted he was “good to go” after Liverpool’s Boxing Day win over Leicester City, but Klopp painted a different picture ahead of tomorrow’s Capital One Cup semi-final with Stoke City.
"Daniel had some problems, not serious, but could not make a session and we had to wait a day,” said the Liverpool manager.
"It is how a pre-season can be. Some little things happen and we have to handle this. It is not a row of sessions and we say 'Now we are here and go...'
"I will pick him when he is ready, I will not hold him back.”
Sturridge has played just 106 minutes under Klopp with knee, foot and hamstring problems restricting his availability on top of his recovery from hip surgery which saw him miss the end of last season and the start of this one under former manager Brendan Rodgers.
Liverpool’s tally of 22 goals in 20 games is their worst ever in the Premier League and Sturridge has not trained with the first team since his latest setback.
Klopp added: "Because he didn't have one session with the team it was not the usual plan for this week.
"What Daniel has to do at this moment is hard work to be prepared for the things we make in a football game. He had the last complete pre-season a long time ago.
"In pre-season we load our bodies with strength, energy, all we need for the games and then the problems start.
"It would be easy for me to say 'Come on, let's try, we have problems, we don't score enough goals, let's see what will happen' but we have to wait and be patient."
Jordan Henderson will miss the trip to The Britannia again with a heel problem.
