Van Gaal's side have come in for pelters this season with the home crowd regularly heard booing at Old Trafford.

United ended an eight-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over Swansea on Saturday, a run in which they scored just five goals.

Van Gaal came under huge pressure over the Christmas period but has refused to resign and insists he can turn things around.

But the Dutchman has been the subject of a thinly-veiled dig from Adidas chief executive Herbert Hainer, with the sportswear giant replacing Nike as kit sponsors from the start of this season.

"Business with Man United is going very well, we sell more shirts than expected," Hainer predictably said in an interview with German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung.

However, more surprisingly Hainer added: "We are satisfied, even if the current playing style of Man United is not exactly what we want to see."

Adidas returned as United's sponsors in the summer after a 23-year break in which time Umbro and Nike represented the Red Devils.

United and Adidas agreed a 10-year deal worth a reported £750million, with Hainer largely happy with how things are going despite his dig at how the team are playing.

"This success confirms again that Man United is not just a football club. With more than 650 million fans globally, it is, without doubt, one of the world's most supported sports symbols," he said.

"This special club has not only a rich history, but also a reputation for success and the unexpected."
