Chelsea are thought to be considering a move to bring Pato to Stamford Bridge in January.

Reports suggest Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has held talks with Pato's agent.

And according to the London Evening Standard, some members of Chelsea's playing staff believe a deal to sign the striker could be done by the time Guus Hiddink's side take on Arsenal.

The Blues travel to the Emirates on Sunday (4pm) for a clash that could all but end their dwindling top-four  hopes.

Chelsea currently sit 14th in the Premier League on 25 points, with table-toppers Arsenal top of the pile with 44 points.

Chelsea are thought to be keen to sign a new striker with Hiddink facing the prospect of playing Arsenal with just Loic Remy fit.

Diego Costa gave the west London club a big scare on Saturday when he was whisked off to hospital after limping out of their 3-3 draw with Everton.

It was initially feared that Costa may have broken his leg, but scans showed he had in fact just badly bruised his tibia.

He is now a doubt for Sunday but did return to Chelsea's Cobham training ground yesterday to receive treatment.

Radamel Falcao remains sidelined with a thigh injury, putting Chelsea on alert for a new striker.

Corinthians are desperate to sell Pato, 26, this month for around £10million.

Blues boss Hiddink appeared to rule out a move for the former AC Milan striker despite claims he has been spotted in the capital.

Pato scored 26 goals last season, spending the majority of the year on loan at Sao Paulo.
