ACTIVISION BLIZZARD have finally confirmed the purchase of competitive eSports company Major League Gaming for a whopping $46 million.
The gaming giants, who own various popular franchises including the Call of Duty series and Guitar Hero, had already formed an eSports division in 2015 as reports of a potential MLG acquisition gained speed.
Speaking to GameSpot, MLG co-founder Mike Sepso explained that plans for an eSports TV channel in the style of ESPN can now be made possible by the deal.
He said: "The basic idea here is the MLG team has unparalleled experience and expertise in producing premium esports content, all the way from creating leagues and structures and operating events and producing the best content out there.
"What we think is missing is a really premium channel, similar to ESPN, that services the esports community with the best content available."
The move could see eSports reach new heights |
Meanwhile, MLG founder Sundance DiGiovanni reckons that Activision Blizzard can help esports reach a new global standing, explaining: "Our mission for over 12 years has been to promote and expand the growth of competitive gaming worldwide.
"And today the industry is at a key inflection point as its popularity soars and rivals that of many traditional professional sports. This acquisition and Activision Blizzard's commitment to competitive gaming will expand the opportunities for gamers to be recognised and celebrated for their competitive excellence."
