DARREN FLETCHER scored his first goal since April to fire the Baggies to victory over Newcastle.
The Scotland midfielder beat Premier League debutant Karl Darlow in the 78th minute to clinch the points for Tony Pulis' side.
Darlow came in for Rob Elliot, who was ill last night, to make his first start for Newcastle after signing from Nottingham Forest but was at fault for the goal.
West Brom had gone four games without a win prior to this afternoon's match with Newcastle still reeling from their last minute defeat to Everton on Boxing Day.
Newcastle remain in the bottom three on 17 points while the Baggies stay 13th but move six points clear of danger.
West Brom striker Saido Berahino started on the bench but was introduced with 20 minutes to go.
But it was Fletcher who broke the deadlock at the Hawthorns with a header from Claudio Yacob's delivery to seal the spoils.
