Arsenal have moved a step closer to solving their midfield problems by agreeing a deal with Basel for Mohamed Elneny.
The midfielder could join up with the Gunners in January if he can agree terms and pass a medical, according to the Daily Mirror.
Arsenal will pay around £5million for the 23-year-old Egypt international.
Arsene Wenger lost Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla for most of the season earlier this month and Mikel Arteta is also out until the middle of January.
He is also without Jack Wilshere and has been partnering Aaron Ramsey with Mathieu Flamini in the centre.
Elneny joined Basel in 2013 from El Mokawlwoon SC in Egypt and has 39 international caps.
Jamie Vardy will be offered an £80,000-a-week deal to keep him out of the clutches of Chelsea and Manchester United.
Vardy, the Premier League's top scorer, is wanted by the country's elite after a stunning start to the season.
Chelsea and United are both keen for striking reinforcements next month but Claudio Ranieri is desperate to keep hold of him.
