TOM CLEVERLEY scored a header deep into injury time to steal the spoils for Everton at St James' Park.
The Toffees dominated proceedings on the slick wet surface but were unable to find a breakthrough until the death when Cleverley headed over Rob Elliot after a tame punch from a corner.
Everton had gone three games without a win and Roberto Martinez's side were staring at a fourth before the former Manchester United man intervened.
Romelu Lukaku had scored in seven consecutive Premier League games but was thwarted by Elliot and the Toon back line.
Chancel Mbemba made crucial tackle to deny Lukaku when he looked like opening the scoring, but Cleverley then did find the net from the resulting corner.
The result sees Newcastle stay in the bottom three and Everton stay 11th.
