Louis van Gaal insists United's goals are on their way |
LOUIS VAN GAAL is backing Manchester United to finally hit the goal trail to keep their Champions League hopes alive against Wolfsburg.
United go into the game in Germany needing a win to guarantee a place in the knockout stages.
But they are struggling to find the back of the net and have attracted criticism for their defensive style under Van Gaal.
The goalless bore draw against West Ham on Saturday means they have failed to score in five of their last nine outings - and they are also without injured skipper Wayne Rooney.
But the Manchester United manager said: "I have the experience as a manager that the goals shall come, because when you are creating chances at the end you will score and finish those chances.
"It's a matter of time and I hope we can prove that tonight."
Van Gaal is backing inexperienced striker Anthony Martial to rediscover his scoring touch and help United avoid the ignominy of dropping into the Europa League.
Martial started his United career like a house on fire after joining them from Monaco in a world record £36m deal for a teenager.
But his form has tailed off in recent weeks and the Frenchman has not scored in his last nine games.
Van Gaal said: "Anthony is very talented but only 20 years old. We must give him time.
"You cannot expect a player of 20 years old to score in the Premier League every week.
"The expectations at this club are very high, but I'm convinced he will continue with his performances and score at the right moments."
United's Bastian Schweinsteiger has been charged with violent conduct following his clash with West Ham defender Winston Reid at the weekend.
The German midfielder appeared to throw his arm into the throat of the New Zealand star.
Referee Mark Clattenburg missed he incident, but the FA have studied video replays and decided to take retrospective action against the World Cup winner.
Schweinsteiger has until noon on Thursday to reply to the charge but he will be hit with an automatic three match ban if found guilty.
