SUNDERLAND are close to signing Andros Townsend from Tottenham in January, according to reports.
The 24-year-old England international has been frozen out by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino after clashing with fitness coach Nathan Gardiner following the 3-1 win over Aston Villa last month.
Townsend has failed to make a first team appearance since Tottenham's 2-1 Europa League defeat to Anderlecht in October.
This lack of game time has seen Townsend grow increasingly frustrated as he fears his Euro 2016 spot could be in jeopardy.
And according to The Independent, Sunderland are ready to hand him a way out of White Hart Lane with a significant increase on his current £40,000-a-week salary on offer to bring him to the Stadium of Light.
Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce is believed to be desperate to add new faces to his struggling side and Townsend is a top target.
This could be a permanent move as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is said to be only interested in offloading the midfielder for a fee of £14million.
Townsend is contracted to Spurs until 2018 but has made just seven first-team appearances for Pochettino's side.
Watford, Newcastle, West Brom and Aston Villa are also interested in signing Townsend.
