Wayne Bridge has tipped Ryan Bertrand for a spot in Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 England squad |
WAYNE BRIDGE believes Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand can be as good as former Chelsea and Arsenal star Ashley Cole.
Bertrand moved to the south coast side after spending nine years with Chelsea, where Cole blocked his path to the first-team.
The 26-year-old, who won a Champions League medal while at Stamford Bridge, has shone since signing for Saints as a replacement for Luke Shaw.
His good form saw him earn his first England call-up for the Euro 2016 qualifying games against Estonia and Lithuania in October.
And Bridge sees no reason why he can't make Roy Hodgson's squad for next summer's tournament.
"I was at Chelsea with Ryan and back then I thought he was a really good player," Bridge told News News Blog Sport. "You could see he had something about him.
"I think he has proven himself to be a tremendous signing since he has moved to Southampton, he was just what they needed when they lost Luke Shaw.
Wayne Bridge checks his hand |
"With Luke out for the rest of the season I think Ryan could definitely secure a spot in the England squad next year.
"He has the potential to be just as good as Ashley was for England."
