PAOLO DI CANIO believes Manchester United are losing their "English spirit".
The Red Devils sit sixth in the Premier League table, nine points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Louis van Gaal's future at Old Trafford remains uncertain with the club on a run of eight games without a win.
Despite still being in contention for the title, the Red Devils were the only English side not to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League.
And former West Ham legend Di Canio believes United's squad aren't living up to the £250million valuation Van Gaal has spent on players.
"Van Gaal's United have never been easy on the eye," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"They play at a low tempo and keep possession – technical football.
"At a certain point, with Bastian Schweinsteiger they had found a minimum of balance.
"Now they are in a tunnel and are weighed down by all the money they have spent in the last 18 months.
"United have lost their English spirit and have not found a more international dimension.
"And then there is Rooney. He also looks like he is on the decline. He has lost the energy that made him great."
