Van Gaal has come under extreme pressure in recent weeks and has seen United's form plummet, losing their coveted top-four spot in the process.
The 2-0 Boxing Day defeat to Stoke, their fourth loss on the bounce, has since compiled the misery for the Dutchman.

And Ferdinand believes the clock is definitely ticking for the former Bayern Munich boss, claiming he will not be in charge next season.
 
"It is a big game for LVG - it seems as though he hasn't got much time left now," he told Breathesport.
"The press have been throwing out some of the stats about his reign at Old Trafford.
 
"And with the likes of Mourinho, Guardiola and club legend Giggs waiting, it doesn't appear as though he will be there at the start of next season."
Manchester United are currently languishing in sixth place in the league behind Tottenham and Crystal Palace and have lost five times this term.
