WAYNE ROONEY is 'on the decline' for Manchester United, claims Paolo Di Canio.
The England striker is having a woeful season by his usual high standards, scoring just two goals so far in the league.
And the captain is no longer a guaranteed striker it seems, after being benched for the 2-0 defeat to Stoke on Boxing Day.
United have now gone on a run of four straight defeats and have slipped outside the top four, with Crystal Palace and Tottenham leap-frogging them.
And former West Ham striker Di Canio believes the 30-year-old is partly to blame, along with Louis van Gaal's bad tactics.
“Van Gaal's United have never been easy on the eye, they play at a low tempo and keep possession – technical football," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"At a certain point, with Bastian Schweinsteiger they had found a minimum of balance. Now they are in a tunnel and are weighed down by all the money they have spent in the last 18 months.
"United have lost their English spirit and have not found a more international dimension.
"And then there is Rooney - he also looks like he is on the decline. He has lost the energy that made him great.”
