John Stones is on Manchester United's summer wishlist |
MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to splash £50million on John Stones in the summer, according to reports.
United will move for Stones in the summer regardless of whether Louis van Gaal remains in charge or not.
Chelsea tried to buy the Everton defender last summer but were knocked back despite lodging three bids.
Jose Mourinho was willing to pay around £40million but couldn't land the England defender.
Harry Redknapp and Glenn Hoddle this week insisted Manchester City needed to land a defender of Stones' calibre.
However the Daily Star report United will break the bank to make him the most joint-most expensive defender in history along with David Luiz.
Stones' progress at Everton has been unaffected by the summer's interest and he's now in position to be England's starting central defender at Euro 2016.
Chelsea are likely to go back in for him as well but may struggle to stump up a similar fee to United if they miss out on Champions League football.
Currently 14th, Chelsea's best hope of playing in next season's competition looks like winning it.
Last night they beat Porto 2-0 to qualify for the last 16 and on Monday they will find out who they meet in the last 16.
Mourinho's side can face either PSG, PSV, Benfica, Juventus, Roma or Gent after winning Group G.
