Arda Turan held talks with Manchester United over the summer before he joined Barcelona, according to his agent.
The former Atletico Madrid midfielder signed for the Catalan giants in the last window, but hasn’t played for them due to the transfer embargo imposed.
Turan’s agent Ahmet Bulut admitted the Red Devils approached him, but Atletico were reluctant at the time to sell.
“Last season Manchester United made a bid for Arda but Atletico Madrid did not want him to leave," he told Turkish publication AMK.
"I was in talks with Barcelona but told nobody about it at the time."
Paul Merson has warned Louis van Gaal to look over his shoulder at United.
Van Gaal has come under criticism for his side’s seemingly dull football.
And after Chelsea sacked Jose Mourinho, Merson reckons the tactician could replace Van Gaal unless the Dutchman breathes life into United’s season.
“If it doesn’t go well for Manchester United in the next week or two, one of the best managers in the world will be available and United will be thinking ‘let’s get him’," Merson told Sky Sports.
“I wouldn’t put my money on it, but if results don’t get their way, I wouldn’t be surprised.”
Diego Forlan has warned his old club that they need to sign some more strikers.
United have been goal shy this term with Wayne Rooney bearing the brunt.
“In my opinion I think they need to have more strikers," Forlan told Omnisport.
"Rooney is a great player but he is getting older and is playing in every position. He can't play every game.”
