Andrei Kanchelskis, who won two Premier League titles at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes Louis van Gaal's tactics are all wrong.
"I am disappointed with the way United are playing, Under Alex Ferguson, we played in a more attacking style of football and played in a 4-4-2," he told Reuters.
"Van Gaal sees things differently. This is not a head coach for Manchester United. I just don't think that Van Gaal understands English football."
Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Pep Guardiola who will be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the Bundesliga season, according to reports.
The Daily Mail claim United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is working on a package to lure the former Barcelona man to Old Trafford.
The report adds that Louis van Gaal will be kept on until the end of the season before being axed, one year early, over the summer.
Wayne Rooney has come out and backed under-fire manager Louis van Gaal, despite the club's recent poor result.
"You have a lot of people talking about things that they believe are happening. But, in reality, the people who are writing that stuff don't really know anything," he told Sky Sports.
"The last few weeks the results haven't been great for us and it's frustrating and as a player it's hard to deal with. We have to be strong and get through it and get the results we need."
