Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel could be out for up to three months with a hamstring injury.
Skrtel was substituted just 41 minutes into the Reds' 3-0 Premier League defeat at Watford on Sunday.
The 31-year-old’s injury leaves Jurgen Klopp with just Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho as his only fit central defenders.
And the former Borussia Dortmund boss may be forced into the transfer market to look for cover.
One defender he has reportedly increased his interest in is Schalke star Joel Matip.
Klopp had been expected to wait until the summer to make a move for the 24-year-old when his contract with the German club runs out.
However, the Daily Mirror claim that after losing Skrtel the Reds boss will ramp up his pursuit of the Cameroon international.

Juventus have ruled out a move for Ilkay Guendogan |

The German midfielder has been linked with a move to Juventus, but the club’s director Beppe Marotta has admitted they will not be making any additions to their squad in January.
He told Italian news outlet Sport Mediaset: "The January transfer window is one for reparation and we do not need to repair anything. In January the moves are not always advantageous for clubs, even if we remain vigilant for any interesting opportunities.
