JURGEN KLOPP must sign an attacking midfield player in January, according to John Barnes.
The Reds recorded a 1-0 win over Sunderland last night to move up to seventh in the league and level on points with Manchester United.
The German's arrival on Merseyside has re-energised Liverpool's players, but Barnes is concerned that without Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho, his former side lack creativity.
"If we play against teams that play deep, we can't open them up. An attacking midfield player is where we need to improve," Barnes told talkSPORT.
“Without Coutinho really performing then our invention and our flair isn’t great.
"We have got lots of hard working players - there is Can, Henderson, Lucas and Milner. So, we have lots of players with a great attitude and great energy, but we are lacking invention.
“Coutinho started the season really well but he has gone off the boil a little bit and without him we really don’t play with that much flair."
Liverpool have been linked with a move for several midfielders in the January transfer window, most notably Stuttgart winger Filip Kostic and Schalke star Leroy Sane.
