His best work, in films such as Dances with Wolves, The Untouchables and JFK have become celebrated pieces of American culture, themselves.
But not ALL of his filmography is quite so highly regarded...
As he releases his latest film, Black or White, we take a cheeky look at some of the incredible highs, and notorious lows, of his amazing life.
Black or White is the story of a grandfather who is suddenly left to care for his granddaughter until her paternal grandmother seeks custody and the little girl finds herself torn between the two families. The film is released on VOD on December 14.

1. When Costner graduated from high school, he was surprisingly only 5'2 – despite eventually growing to be 6'1.
He's acknowledged that he has still never got over being short.
2. After marrying his college sweetheart and taking a marketing job in Orange County, Costner randomly met legendary actor Richard Burton on a return flight from his honeymoon in Mexico.
After Costner explained his dream to be an actor, Burton told him not to hold back if acting was what he truly wanted.
3. While trying to break into Hollywood as an actor, he gave bus tours to stars Los Angeles homes. Now, that tour probably stops at his house.
He also worked as a skipper on Jungle Cruise at Disneyland California while his former wife, Cindy Silva, played Snow White.
4. His first film role was in the (1981) low-budget softcore film Sizzle Beach (aka. Malibu Hot Summer) produced by schlock masters Troma.
High art it isn't.
"Three beautiful young women, who meet by chance, decide to follow their dreams of stardom to Malibu," says the film's blurb.
"As they become more accustomed to the Los Angeles lifestyle, they each explore fantasies they never knew existed."
Most of these fantasies seem to involve being topless, with cowboy Costner grinning uncomfortably in a stable.
Then again, what does he care? Six short years later he was the lead in the smash hit gangster movie The Untouchables, alongside Sean Connery.
5. Costner has seven children with three separate women. Costner and his first wife, Cindy Costner, had three children.
After their divorce, he had a son with girlfriend Bridget Rooney, before getting married to Christine Baumgartner, with whom he also has three children.
6. His divorce from wife Cindy Silva listed as the No. 5 Most Expensive Celebrity Divorce according to Forbes.com with an estimated £50 million plus settlement.
7. He won Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture in 1990 for Dances With Wolves. Yay...
Less happily, he has also collected six Razzie Award nominations, with four wins including Worst Picture, Actor AND Director for The Postman in 1998.

8. In May 1998 he was voted the 'Most Erotic Male' by the readers of Italian woman's magazine Amica.
Less impressively, he was ranked 87th in Empire Magazine's list of 100 Sexiest Stars in Film History in 1995.
9. He refused to star in Platoon (1986) because he believed it was insulting to American soldiers. The actor had very personal reasons for his decision, since his own brother was a Vietnam veteran.
Costner has been in two films about John F. Kennedy – JFK (1991) and Thirteen Days (2000). Disappointingly, he didn’t play the president in either one.
