Pat Nevin (left) says Chelsea are guilty of 'short-termism' |
CHELSEA will regret sacking Jose Mourinho claims former Stamford Bridge great Pat Nevin.
The Blues sacked Mourinho, 52, yesterday, just seven months after he guided the club to the Premier League title.
He lasted just under two-and-a-half years at the club - a season shorter than his previous stint in west London, when he won two titles.
Chelsea director Michael Emenalo said "something had to be done" following Chelsea's disastrous start to the season.
But Nevin, who made over 190 appearances for the Blues in the 1980s, insists axing Mourinho was the wrong decision.
"I felt he would ride out this one, purely because they had waited this long,” Nevin told BBC 5Live.
"There was a desperation from Chelsea to ride this one out.
"They wanted to change the system they had of changing managers every years or two. They wanted to try and build a dynasty.
“If you’re into ‘short-termism’ then I think it’s the right decision. ‘Longer-termism’, I think the guy is a great manager - he will go somewhere else and become a great manager again."
"You might find yourself somewhere longer down the line feeling you’ve made a mistake.”
Former Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink, who managed the club for a short period in 2009, is favourite to take over until the end of the season.
