ARSENE WENGER should make a January move for Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick in January, says former Gunners forward Charlie Nicholas.

Wenger has made no secret of his desire to sign a holding midfielder when the transfer window reopens in a few days following injury to Francis Coquelin.
Arsenal have been linked with Southampton’s Victor Wanyama, Basel’s Mohamed Elneny and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.
But Nicholas, who made over 180 appearances for the north London club, believes Wenger should swoop for Carrick as he has the right amount of experience in England’s top flight.

The England international has struggled to hold onto a regular starting spot under Louis van Gaal, mainly down to the summer arrivals of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.
The 34-year-old has stared just 11 of United’s 18 outings in the Premier League this term.
“The one key position is a holding midfield player,” Nicholas told Soccer Saturday. “I don’t know why he wouldn’t go for anyone with Premier League experience.

“It makes sense for me to go for someone between the age of 30-32. There are a few about and if I was Arsenal I would go for Carrick.
“He’s not got the legs and pace but you need somebody with experience who has authority and gets the ball and passes it.
“I am not saying he would play every week but Carrick could teach as well as play. Someone has to teach these players how to play positions.”
