ARSENE WENGER hailed Mesut Ozil as his new Dennis Bergkamp after the Germany international inspired Arsenal to a 2-0 win over Bournemouth that lifts them back to the top of the Premier League.
Gabriel opened the scoring from an Ozil corner before the playmaker added one of his own in the second half.
Now, just as Bergkamp became the hub of the team that won Wenger his first title in 1998, he believes Ozil has the qualities to lead the class of 2015 to similar success.
“Bergkamp was more of a goalscorer than him but now Mesut is becoming more of a goalscorer, too. So are they comparable? Yes,” said Wenger.
“Mesut was certainly the focal point to our team. I have not seen many of that quality. He has remarkable technical quality and I enjoy very much the timing of his passes.
“To get that always right is not easy. It is a sign of someone who hears the song in his head always at the right tone.
“I don’t like to compare players but he is an exceptional player and you have to give me credit – I was always defending that point of view, even when you were sceptical about it.
“I have seen a few good games from Mesut. What is important is that he convinces everybody he is not just a very talented player but he is working hard for the team and he has added scoring goals to assists. He is a complete player.
“What is important is that he becomes the best he can be. He is on the way.”
Similarly, Wenger drew comparisons between Petr Cech and David Seaman after the former kept a record 170th Premier League clean sheet, so it was no surprise to hear Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe tipping them for the title.
“There is a good possibility that Arsenal will be champions,” he said. “They are a very good side with a couple of exceptional individuals. They are very strong.
“He has become a complete sensational football player. I am very, very happy with his performances. He is one of the best in Europe certainly. In his position, he is sensational.”
