AFTER being inseparable for the majority of their 20s and 30s, Sue Perkins felt a great loss when her co-star Mel Giedroyc got married.
The Great British Bake Off host has described the pair's friendship as a "double helix" and said that it was "so frightening" to let her go, after they first met at Cambridge University back in 1988.
Discussing her memoir Spectacles at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, the 46-year-old opened up about the difficult time she had when her pal, 47, wed "amazing" Ben Morris.
Speaking to actress Dawn French, Sue admitted: "Through all of our 20s and a good chunk of our 30s we were inseparable.
"You actually love each other and she met this amazing guy. There was this moment where you think 'Oh'."
Sue continued: "I felt a certain kind of loss when she got married and had a kid." However, the presenter added that there was "no sexual jealousy" involved.
Mel married the television director 13 years ago and they have two children.
The TV regular also told the Daily Mail: "It is not 'I want what you have', it is not 'I’m jealous', it is the letting go and the profound love as you do it. You have to let the change happen… It has so many rewards."
Mel and Sue have been hosting GBBO since it began in 2010, after getting their big break on the French & Saunders sketch show.
The star's comments come after it was revealed that Mel had joined the cast of ITV’s live adaptation of The Sound of Music.
She will play stoic housekeeper Frau Schmidt in the star-studded production, which is set to air over Christmas.
