GASTON RAMIREZ wants to leave Southampton in January, according to his agent.
The Uruguay attacker - once the club's record signing - has endured a miserable time at St Mary's since signing from Bologna in 2012.
He was sent out on loan to relegated Hull last season and reports claim Newcastle were looking to rescue him from his south coast nightmare.
However, the 24-year-old's representative, Pablo Betancour, says his client would prefer a move back to Italy.
"He has suffered a few physical problems in England and he also had to give up to the national team and Copa America," he said.
"He wants to come back to Italy. This is a thought and when we talk about Italy, we talk about Bologna.
"At Christmas he will become a free agent. It's not a matter of money, but the fact he can be an important player in a place he loves."
If Ramirez does leave, he could be one of two attackers to leave in the January transfer window.
Manchester United made a bid for team-mate Sadio Mane in the summer.
And while they were ultimately unsuccessful, they could return with an improved offer to try and get him when the window opens.
