Cristiano Ronaldo (centre) may head to the MLS after his Real Madrid career ends |
MANCHESTER UNITED'S hopes of signing Cristiano Ronaldo have taken a blow after it emerged the MLS are willing to spend big to land the Old Trafford legend.
United are known suitors of Ronaldo, 30, and are keen to bring him back to the club he quit in 2009.
Real Madrid paid £80million for the ace, who has gone on to break numerous goalscoring records in Spain.
It was thought manager Louis van Gaal would test his transfer muscle in the 2016 summer window.
But French newspaper L'Equipe today report Ronaldo's next destination will be America.
It is claimed that a proposal to bring Ronaldo to the States would cost an MLS franchise a staggering £194m.
And that is purely in wages.
According to the report, Ronaldo would command a 10-year contract at just under £20m a season.
Compare that to David Beckham, who signed a five-year deal in California back in 2007 worth £128m, and Ronaldo's proposed salary would not break the MLS record.
However, the 10-year deal would see Ronaldo earning big money into his 40s, while the player's income from endorsements would undoubtably increase from the £17.6m he has picked up this year alone.
