Jesse Lingard was called into Roy Hodgson's last England squad |
LOUIS VAN GAAL remains insistent that Jesse Lingard was called into the England squad too early.
Lingard was called up by Roy Hodgson after Michael Carrick was injured against Spain.
The 22-year-old didn't feature against France but trained with the side in the build up and was on the bench at Wembley.
The decision to call up Lingard was criticised because he'd only made one Premier League start this season - along with three substitute appearances.
“I am pleased but it is very fast," Van Gaal said today.
"It is the circumstances also, but still I have congratulated him with his promotion so it is always fine to see how players are developing and because of that he is rewarded.
"When a player shows what he can do on a high level then he can do it also on the national team and now he has an experience to be in the selection of the national squad of England which is a different environment.”
United face an injury crisis tomorrow with five players having been ruled out.
Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, Michael Carrick, Anthonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini are all out for Watford.
