Manchester United will have to pay Lionel Messi around £600,000 a week in wages to sign him, according to The Daily Star.
They claim the Barcelona ace, 28, is becoming increasingly unsettled in Spain due to allegations of tax fraud.
And he could now leave the Nou Camp, with Chelsea also understood to be monitoring the situation.
While United might be the only club who can realistically afford him, it is reported that Arsenal is his preferred destination.
In other news involving Arsenal, the Red Devils are said to be considering an offer of £53m for Alexis Sanchez.
While a deal seems unlikely, the two clubs have previous, with Robin van Persie making the same switch in 2012.
Sanchez, 26, only signed for the Gunners at the start of last season but manager Louis van Gaal is said to be willing to stump up a significant fee after watching the Chilean score twice in the Gunners' 3-0 win at Old Trafford last month.
Van Gaal appears intent on adding attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window and he is also thought to be monitoring Arjen Robben's situation at Bayern Munich.
His fellow Dutchman is reported to be unsettled after falling out with team-mate Robert Lewandowski.
And the United chief could take advantage of the situation by bringing the ex-Chelsea winger, 31, back to England.
