Louis van Gaal has already stated that he wants two pacy wingers in January |
LOUIS VAN GAAL has insisted that Manchester United will head the scramble to sign their former star Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.
Speaking about the 30-year-old Real Madrid forward's future for the first time and the chances of a return to Old Trafford Van Gaal revealed: "With Ronaldo, let's wait and hope."
Asked whether Ronaldo who is expected to leave The Bernabeu at the end of the season is on United's radar, Van Gaal confirmed: "Ronaldo plays on the wings and he is fast and scores goals. There is no trainer in the world that doesn't like him.
"Of course we are looking at all players - not just Ronaldo."
United spent last summer in pursuit of Ronaldo's Real Madrid team-mate Gareth Bale and the Wales flyer remains a target.
But while Real Madrid will again try to keep hold of their £86 million world record buy it appears they are prepared to listen to offers for Ronaldo who arrived from Old Trafford in July 2009 for £80 million.
Even though the Portuguese star is 31 in February Real Madrid will be looking to recoup most of that outlay in the knowledge that there is no sign of Ronaldo's skills being in decline.
Van Gaal brought in Memphis Depay, but has been unhappy with the Dutchman's performance |
Both Ronaldo and the club believe next summer is the right time to call time on a wonderful spell in Spain.
There have been a number of fall outs and Ronaldo is resigned to moving on and taking up a new challenge.
Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City are all likely to try and threaten United's ambitions of bringing back their prodigal son.
United though still have Sir Alex Ferguson - the man Ronaldo looks upon as a father figure - in their ranks as a high profile ambassador, something which could prove key in any negotiations.
Van Gaal meanwhile has made the first public move to bring Ronaldo home to Manchester United.
