JUDI DENCH showed Jennifer Lawrence who's boss at the UK box office as live screenings of The Winter's Tale beat The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 to the top. New UK cinema Encore screenings have been announced and we have all the information.
Judi Dench proved that she is still the queen of British screens, big and small.
The live screenings of The Winter's Tale from the Garrick Theatre in London on Thursday 26 November made it the biggest film of the week in UK cinemas.
The new production by the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company took a whopping £1.1 million in just one night, beating the final installment of the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise into second place.
Such is the incedible success of the screenings that more have been announced for December and January.
“To be able to celebrate our production of The Winter’s Tale with cinema audiences is a true privilege," said Kenneth Branagh.
"I would like to thank our partners at Picturehouse and the talented Benjamin Caron for enabling us to bring The Winter’s Tale to screens around the world.”
As well as 520 screenings across the UK, the play was also shown live in 1,300 cinemas across Europe, including Portugal, Spain, Austria, Malta and Germany.
Canadian audiences were also treated to screenings, but US fans will have to wait until November 30.
Judi Dench stars as Paulina in The Winter's Tale opposite Kenneth Brannagh's tragic Leontes.
The epic tale of jealousy, betrayal, obssession and redemption sold out its initial ticket run as soon as they were released.
Critics raved about the production, including The Daily Express' own Neil Norman.
"In the key role of Paulina, Dame Judi Dench is nothing less than a marvel," he wrote.
"Stern, brave, heartbreaking and with a warmth that would melt a glacier, she is the human heart in this cool and wondrous production of the Bard’s most avant-garde play. Don’t miss."
It is merely the latest triumph for Judi Dench, who has burst into tears over fears she might never work again.
Some tickets may still be available for certain performances, available direct from the box office. (More information on tickets at the end.)
