Now his boss at Real, Benitez admits he was turned away by Bale's former club Southampton before he joined Tottenham.
“Back in 2006 I went to see Southampton," Benitez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.
“We transferred a player to Southampton but they wouldn’t give us Bale. We then tried to buy him, we couldn’t. I’ve known for a long time he was a great player.
“[Jamie] Carragher has made the mistake of saying I preferred [John Arne] Riise, but it wasn’t like that.”
