Tony Pulis believes Alan Pardew could be the next England manager |
TONY PULIS says Newcastle fans could have waved goodbye to the next England manager.
West Brom boss Pulis believes Alan Pardew is emerging as the top candidate to take over the national team.
He tries to pull the rug under Pulis and his former club Crystal Palace this afternoon.
And with Palace riding high and Newcastle down at the bottom, Pulis can’t help wondering who got the better end of the deal.
It was the Baggies boss who engineered Palace’s miracle turnaround from near-certain relegation fodder to a 12th-placed finish and scooped the Manager of the Year award in the process.
He revealed that Pardew actually gave him a call before taking over from the the job he vacated at Selhurst Park.
Pulis said: “When Roy Hodgson calls it a day, after these Euros or whether he wants to go to the World Cup – which I imagine he will – Pards will be right up there.
“Knowing Roy he’ll want to keep going until he falls over! But after that, Alan would definitely be one of those people who’d be in contention in my opinion.
“The England job brings its own different type of pressure but he can cope with all of that. He likes the bright lights!”
Pulis believes the Palace job has rejuvenated Pardew after five arduous years at St James’ Park when he never managed to win over the Newcastle fans.
He added: “I can’t speak for Newcastle supporters, I don’t live up there and I don’t understand the terrace culture in lots of respects.
“The only thing I’d say is that every time he’s gone in somewhere he’s made his mark.
“And nine times out of 10 it’s been good, he’s done his job and done well by the clubs who’ve employed him.”
Pulis has no reason to suspect he won’t get a good reception – he was well received earlier in the year when he went back.
“I don’t think they’ll keep doing it though! They won’t keep rolling out the carpet – plus we won there last season.”
And Pardew will no doubt share a glass of wine with him afterwards as he revealed: “I spoke to Pards before he took the job. I told him exactly what it was like, how good the supporters were, but he knew that anyway, he’d been at the club before as a player.
“There’s a life span for most managers at most clubs and it looks as though it’s been good for Alan. It’s refreshed him and given him a new lease of life.”
