Dr Aseem Malhotra claims deaths from heart disease could be halved if people by changing diet
DEATHS from heart disease could be cut by half in a year if people adopted the lifestyle and high fat diet found in the Mediterranean, an expert claims.
GLOBAL deaths from heart disease would be cut by half within a year if people adopted the Mediterranean way of life - not just their diet.
In a new campaign led by world leading cardiologist, Dr Aseem Malhotra and backed by Jamie Oliver and Keith Vaz, MP, Dr Malhotra said the “true secret" to longevity is the Mediterranean approach to life – moderate exercise, time outdoors, socializing, and regular sex – alongside a high fat mediterranean diet.
Overturning long held diet myths Dr Malhotra said following his new protocol could overcome the obesity crisis within one year with people dramatically improving their health within just three weeks.
He accused the food industry of misleading the public over how to live well and said mixed messages had been sent out.
Research suggests eating food higher in natural fats like olives and nuts
His public health crusade, will be launched next year alongside a groundbreaking documentary, which he says: “Cuts through the epidemic of misinformation which has caused the worldwide crisis of obesity and type two diabetes."
Dr Malhotra says instead of eating low fat and low calorie foods for good health, “as as the food industry has led people to do", people should eat high fat unprocessed produce, cutting out all refined carbohydrates and sugar.
This, he says, can dramatically improve health in just 21 days.
Middle aged men who have sex at least twice a week are fifty per cent less likely to suffer heart disease than those who do so once a month - due to both “physical and emotional benefits".
Moderate exercise and spending plenty of time outside can contribute to a longer, healthier life
Dr Malhotra, who has analysed hundreds of research papers on the impact of lifestyle on health also said people are led to believe doing more exercise is the cure to obesity but he says: “nothing could be further from the truth". “Exercise has many benefits but weight loss is not one of them. Obesity has rocketed in the western population in the last 30 years despite the fact exercise levels have changed very little and may have in fact increased. This places the blame entirely on the types of food people are eating. It quite clear sugar is public enemy number one in the western diet," he said.
The message is that following these new guidelines could slash deaths from heart disease, the number one global killer, by 50 per cent

He added: “Modern healthcare has become a thinly disguised marketplace of commercial influence. We are going to show the truth." In his documentary, Dr Malhotra visits the village of Pioppi, southern Italy, the UNESCO protected home of the Mediterranean diet to recover its true meaning. He said: “There is no true Mediterranean Diet. There never has been. The true secrets of Mediterranean longevity certainly include food, but there are lifestyle factors we have left behind. We have gone back to the source to recover this knowledge. If we can scale this message successfully, this movie has the power to save millions of lives." Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver said: "Any programme which looks at diet from the point of view of improving health is going to be important. Aseem is an expert when it comes to diet and the impact it can have - good or bad." Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary All Party Diabetes Group also supported the campaign. He said: “'Cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra stands out as the most prolific and fearless doctor when it comes to exposing the truth about our health." His decision to finance the movie independently follows Coca Cola's recent exposure for financially influencing nutritional research to favour its own agenda. The new documentary, The Pioppi Protocol, will be screened to doctors and political decision makers around the world next June before a general release to the public. Dr Malhotra said: “There is no time to waste. We know that a 21 day lifestyle intervention can dramatically improve heart health. The sooner we can get this project completed, the sooner we can start saving lives." For more information visit: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/835313616/the-mediterranean-diet-a-big-fat-hoax
