The agent of Kalidou Koulibaly has revealed the 24-year-old defender turned down a move away from Napoli in the summer, with Manchester United reportedly keen on his services.

Bruno Satin said: “In the summer there was the possibility of leaving, but the lad chose to stay because he wanted to prove himself at Napoli, which he’s doing.

Meanwhile, according to Portuguese publication A Bola, United had a £22million deal in place to sign Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan in the off season.

However, Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal instead opted for attacking pair Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial from PSV Eindhoven and Monaco respectively.

Pep Guardiola has put long-term admirers United on red alert after admitting he’d struggle to spend a long time in charge at Bayern Munich, where he joined in 2013.

He said: “20 years at one club is now impossible. Nobody has that energy any more! It can get boring. Arsenal is an exception, like Sir Alex Ferguson was.”
