Louis van Gaal was surprised by Jesse Lingard's effort |
LOUIS VAN GAAL admits he was 'surprised' by substitute Jesse Lingard during the Manchester Derby.
The Red Devils boss saw his side play out a scoreless stalemate against City for just the third time in Premier League history yesterday.United went closest to claiming the win at Old Trafford when academy product Lingard came off the bench and turned a high ball from Anthony Martial onto the crossbar. And Van Gaal was amazed to see the 22-year-old midfielder make a chance out of nothing as United finished the draw with just one shot on target - like City.On Lingard's chance, the Dutchman said: "I was surprised that he could do that because it was a very difficult situation for him.

Jesse Lingard hit the woodwork late on against in Manchester Derby |
"He did remarkably well in that situation, but we didn’t create so many chances because it was difficult with how they played."They were so organised and played on the counter attack. It was the same in the game against Moscow, but it says something about the strength of Manchester United."
