Aston Villa held firm in their negotiations with Liverpool this summer, insisting they would not sell their star striker unless the £32.5m clause was met.
Liverpool eventually paid the fee but Sherwood claims the Belgium striker’s true value is far greater.
“Benteke leaving was absolutely the same as (Luis) Suarez [leaving Liverpool for Barcelona], or Gareth Bale [leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Real Madrid],” said Sherwood.
“If he didn’t have a clause in his contract then £100 million wouldn’t have taken him away from us.
“He wasn’t worth selling for any money. No money can guarantee you Premier League survival – that player could.”

Everton could still sign Dynamo Kiev’s Andriy Yarmolenko, despite the player signing a five-year contract this summer.
The Toffees were understood to be keen on the midfielder during pre-season but no move ever materialised.
And the Daily Star claim the Ukrainian is also a Liverpool target - and that the player is open to moving to the Premier League.
Yarmolenko reportedly told their official website: “I still want that [to test myself in the best foreign leagues].
“I know that if Dynamo get really worthy offers we’ll find an option that satisfies everyone.”
He added: “I want the club to get good compensation for me. I could have left for free in a while, but that would have been wrong.”
