ARSENE WENGER believes the stunning win against Manchester United before the international break set the benchmark for the team this season and insists his players show the same focus when they play Watford on Saturday.
The 3-0 win, achieved with all the goals coming in a pulsating first 19 minutes, lifted the side to second place going into the evening kick-off at Vicarage Road.
“I think a result like that can increase the belief and the hunger of the team,” Wenger said. “On the other hand you have to show that you can come in to every game with that focus.
“It was difficult to have to go on an international break, but we separated on a positive vibe. Now, the task is to reconnect quickly because everybody goes to their national teams and has different worries.
“The target is to refocus on what we want to achieve. We play against Watford who have conceded only one goal at home and defend very well. They are a very difficult team to play against so we have to focus to get a positive result on Saturday.”
And Wenger has made it absolutely clear he will not tolerate any signs of complacency from his players against the newly-promoted side.
“The level of champions and people who want to fight at the top is urgency,” he said. “Urgency is something that keeps you alert and we know what will be expected of us.
“We have to be conscious that it will be a different game but the level of urgency is a big part of success and that is what we work on.”
And, with Arsenal just two points off the top of the league, Wenger believes they can challenge for the title
“The top eight can compete for the Premier League. It is difficult to rule anybody out," he said.
“You can compete for the championship if you turn up and fight for every game.
“We need to show the same quality.”
