His loving relationship with Jose Mourinho... |
The Gunners started the match having won just one of their last 13 Premier League fixtures against United.
United hadn't been beaten by Arsenal at the Emirates in four matches while Wayne Rooney boasted a healthy goalscoring record.
The England skipper had scored 11 goals against Arsenal, only Newcastle and Aston Villa with 12 and 13 respectively had conceded more to the 29-year-old.
But a fast start by the Gunners saw them put the game beyond United's reach in an opening 20 minutes described by Theo Walcott as the best in years.
The result also moved Wenger's side above the Red Devils in the Premier League table on goal difference.
And the Frenchman believes the win was important for three reasons.
Arsene Wenger faces a make or break match against Bayern Munich |
He told beIN Sports: "First of all, we had a very disappointing result three days before against Olympiakos and of course that was a huge shock.
"Secondly it was for us an opportunity to get two points behind the leader, level with Manchester United.
"We also beat them, and on top of that, the third, in recent years we have not beaten United in Championship so on three fronts it was a vital win for us."
