Erik Lamela looked set for a move away from White Hart Lane until Tottenham pulled the plug |
TOTTENHAM pulled the plug on Erik Lamela's move to Marseille after they failed to sign Saido Berahino from West Brom, according to the French clubs' president.
Spurs made a number of bids for England international Berahino over the summer, the last of which on deadline day totaled £22.5million, but only £6.5m was offered up front.
The 22-year-old reacted angrily and threatend to go on strike after directing comments towards Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace on social media.
Tottenham's failure to land Berahino had implications for Lamela, who hoped to kick-start his faltering career in Ligue 1.
The 23-year-old had expected complete a move to Inter Milan before the Italian giants signed Ivan Perisic from Wolfsburg.
But Marseille came in with a late offer for the Argentinian after manager Michel turned down chances to sign AC Milan's Alessandro Matri and Tottenham's own Emmanuel Adebayor.
Speaking to French newspaper Le Parisien, Marseille president Vincent Labrune said: "On August 31, we decided to wait for a better opportunity [to sign a striker] this winter and to concentrate on the ambitious dossier of Erik Lamela.
"We got the agreement of the player, his agent and the club but at 11 p.m. - when they weren't able to get a replacement - Tottenham put an end to negotiations."
