The Sony Xperia Z5 features a waterproof design and 23 megapixel camera |
SONY has revealed its latest flagship smartphone series, which comes in three variations and includes the first smartphone to be able to record and watch 4K video.
Sony today announced its latest series of Xperia smartphone, the Z5.
The Xperia Z5, which sports a 5.2inch Full HD display, waterproof design and a 23megapixel rear camera.
The Japanese technology firm unveiled its new flagship smartphone collection earlier this afternoon at the IFA conference in Berlin.
The stylish Xperia Z5 arrives in three variations –
- The Z5 Compact, which is easily-pocketable with its modest 4.6inch 720p HD display, as well the firm’s trademark waterproof design and 23 megapixel rear camera, which also supports 4K video capture.
- Finally the Japanese firm announced the Xperia Z5 Premium – the first smartphone able to record and play back 4K video footage
Sony is releasing three different variations of its Xperia Z5 flagship phone |
The Xperia Z5 Premium boasts an eye-watering 5.5inch 4K display with a dazzling 3840 by 2160 pixel screen – some 806 pixels-per-inch.
It’s also worth noting that Sony appears to have fixed the teething problems it encountered with some of its earlier 4K smartphones, like the Sony Xperia Z3+ which would often overheat and shutdown during video capture.

The Z5 Premium has a sleek 7.8mm waterproof frame, meaning you’ll be able to shoot 4K home movies underwater now too.
Sony is powering its entire Xperia Z5 range with the 64bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.
The three Z5 entries also sport a fingerprint scanner, with is embedded into the side of the device.
Sony says this is the best possible position as your thumb will fall naturally into place on the scanner whenever you raise the handset to take a call, pull it out of your pocket or turn it over to check a notification.
How much the 4K video capture – and more importantly – 4K video playback affects battery life, remains to be seen.
The Sony smartphones will ship with Google's Android 5.1 Lollipop, with the usual Xperia facelift.
Sony hopes to launch the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact in the UK next month.
However the Xperia Z5 Premium will not arrive on British shores until November.
There is no word yet on a final UK price, however Sony says to expect each model of Z5 to be priced competitively with other premium smartphones.
