SMARTPHONE firm Huawei has announced a new flagship smartphone, the Huawei Mate S and beaten Apple to the market with its much-rumoured pressure sensitive technology, Force Touch.
Huawei – the worlds’ fourth largest smartphone manufacturer – today launched the Mate S during its IFA press event in Berlin.
The firm announced its new flagship smartphone, the Huawei Mate S.
The sleek smartphone sports an ultra-High Definition 5.5inch display with 401-pixel-per-inch and Gorilla Glass 4.

The glass is slightly-curved and appears to bleed over the “dual diamond cut” edges around the svelte 2.65mm frame.
Its a design very similar to the iPhone 6.
In fact, the Cupertino firm made multiple appearances during the Huawei press event.
Huawei announced it had included Force Touch technology – much rumoured for the upcoming iPhone 6S – which brings pressure sensitivity to the Mate S display.
Huawei also poked fun at rival Apple during the announcement, bringing up the iPhone 6 at multiple points during the event.

The firm took the time to explain its design choices and called out Sir Jony Ive’s iPhone 6 design.
Huawei presented the IFA auditorium with a side-by-side comparison between the Mate S and the iPhone 6, commenting on the prominent antenna lines visible on the rear shell of the later.
The Chinese firm also talked at length about its Knuckle Sense technology, which allows the smartphone to differentiate between a tap from a finger and a tap from a knuckle.
Knuckles play a much larger role in quickly navigating around the Huawei Mate S |
Huawei has added a slew of new functionality to its knuckle tapping technology.
Drawing an “M” on your smartphone with your knuckle will launch the music app, tapping two knuckles on a video will pause the playback, drawing a “W” wherever you are in the mobile interface will launch a weather app.
Users can also set-up their own shortcuts with the settings menu.
The Huawei Mate S also has a 13 megapixel rear camera with with a RGBW sensor, optical image stabiliser and an independent image signal processor camera unit.
An eight megapixel front-facing camera adorns the front of the smartphone.
Huawei has added a soft light which it claims dramatically improves selfies.
Similar to the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz software, Huawei has added a professional camera mode, which allows manual adjustment for ISO, exposure compensation, exposure time, white balance and focusing, and functions such as the grid, and flash-assisted focusing.
Huawei will launch the Mate S on September 15th in a number of Western European countries, including the UK.
Prices start from €64, around £476, for a version with 32GB of internal storage. The 64GB model starts from €699, some £513.
Unfortunately neither support the Force Touch technology.
The Mate S with Force Touch and 128GB of internal storage will be announced at a later date, Huawei has said.
