Tom Cleverley was injured during a challenge with Eric Dier at White Hart Lane on Saturday |
TOM CLEVERLEY'S has avoided a "devastating" injury - Everton manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed.
Toffees midfielder Cleverley went down under a challenge from Eric Dier during the club's 0-0 draw at Tottenham last weekend.
It was thought the player would require a long stint on the sidelines after his right leg was caught in the tackle.
But Martinez revealed Cleverley has avoided an ankle fracture.
“We have mixed feelings because we feared the worst when that challenge happened.
“We thought that it was a fracture and to have a fracture at this stage of the season for Tom would have been devastating because his form has been terrific.
“He has got ligament damage and the next step will be to see how long he is going to be out.
"It’s an injury we need to try and recover as quickly as we can but clearly it’s good news from when we saw Tom falling to the ground at White Hart Lane.”
Everton were waiting on news of Cleverley's condition as they made moves in the transfer market yesterday.
The club brought in Aaron Lennon from Tottenham, as well as defender Ramiro Funes Mori.
And Martinez said England winger Lennon - who enjoyed a loan stint at Goodison Park last season - will fit straight into the squad.
"We are delighted to welcome Aaron back to Everton," he said.
"We know we are getting a player our fans know inside out. He had a major role in the second half of our season and we're looking forward to Aaron kicking on and continuing to enjoy his football, as well as being the productive player we know he can be.
"He is well-respected in the dressing room, his experience in the Premier League is immense and he will immediately add to our squad and to the ambition we have as a club."
