Steve McClaren's Newcastle side lost 2-1 to Watford today |
STEVE McCLAREN insists he knew the job he was taking on when being appointed Newcastle manager this summer.
The Magpies are yet to record a league win under their new boss as they went down 2-1 at home to Watford this afternoon.
The result leaves them locked with Sunderland at the bottom of the Premier League table - two points off safety.
Two first-half goals from Odion Ighalo got the Hornets on their way before Daryl Janmaat offered the Tynesiders some hope after the break.
But McClaren could not inspire a comeback and was left to rue his side’s start to the season after the defeat.
"No-one said this job was going to be easy, we didn’t think it would be,” he said.
“I thought the last two games would be a test for us and we would know a lot more and we know now this is a tough job, a hard job."
Newcastle are not due to meet Sunderland until late October, by which point both McClaren and counterpart Dick Advocaat will hope to have got more points on the board.
The Black Cats lost 2-0 at Bournemouth this afternoon as goals for Callum Wilson and Matt Ritchie in the first 10 minutes got the south coast club on their way.
And Advocaat was left searching for answers after their fourth loss of the campaign already.
“We have to wonder what we do wrong,” he said.
“We work hard in training so me and the players have to look in the mirror.
"Two points after six games is not good enough. Nice words is not enough, we have to do it a different way now. I am sure we will stay up though."
