Louis van Gaal insists Matteo Darmian change was tactical |
LOUIS VAN GAAL has explained his decision to substituted defender Matteo Darmian during the 3-2 win at Southampton.
The Italian right-back, who joined in the summer for £12.7m from Torino, was taken off at half-time and replaced with Antonio Valencia.
But Van Gaal did not take Darmian off because of an injury and he insists his decision was purely tactical.
He explained: "It was a tactical change because Tadic had a lot of space and was very dangerous for us. I wanted to eliminate that with Valencia and he did that very well I think."
The Red Devils boss has previously been full of praise for the 25-year-old, who has started every game since his Old Trafford switch.
The Dutchman recently said of Darmian: "A full-back firstly has to defend and then secondly he has to build up.
"Thirdly, he has to attack and give an option to his fellow players in front of him. He has fulfilled my expectations of him so far."
