Brendan Rodgers has come under pressure after a poor start to the season |
STEVE CLARIDGE has questioned under-fire Brendan Rodgers and claims he isn't convinced by the Liverpool manager's credentials.
Rodgers has come under intense pressure after their stuttering start to the current season and a poor showing last term.
Fans appear to be fed up and have been clambering for the appointment of Jurgen Klopp, and former Leicester hero Claridge agrees.
Some fans are even trying to rally supporters into dressing up as the former Borussia Dortmund chief for this weekend's clash with Aston Villa.
While Rodgers came close to steering the Reds to their first ever Premier League crown just two seasons ago, Claridge even claimed he shouldn't take the credit, instead insisting anybody with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge at their disposal would be able to do the same.
He also pointed to the Northern Irishman spending nearly £80million on new players in the transfer window and his profligacy in the market last summer.
"Is it £260m they've spent?," Claridge said.
"I'm not sure that it was because of him [Rodgers] that they got so close [to winning the league].
"In Suarez and Sturridge I've never seen two people play that way. They only had one way to play and I think that was shown against Crystal Palace at the end of the season.
"I think he's a really nice fella and I really like him as a person, but I'm not convinced by him as a manager and I never have been.
Jurgen Klopp is the fans' favourite to take the job at Anfield if Rodgers does go |
"It's been a mish-mash over the last two years. He's spent an awful lot of money and he's still at a situation where he's rushing Sturridge back because he's needed and I don't see where he's going with the side.
"I don't see the end game. I don't see the system that he's trying to employ.
"You spend that amount of money and he should be a lot closer to the end.
"And I just think he's gone round in a circle and is back where he started, probably even a bit further back."
