Andy King scored the winner for Leicester with four minutes of extra time remaining |
King headed home a cross by Christian Fuchs in the 116th minute to give the Foxes a deserved place in round four of the Capital One Cup after they bombarded their visitors in the extra half-hour.
Leicester whizz-kid Joe Dodoo had made an instant impact on his home debut to keep up his superb Capital One Cup record.
The 20-year-old academy graduate struck after just six minutes on his first King Power Stadium appearance following a hat-trick on his debut at Bury in round two.
West Ham's Andy Carroll was quiet in his first start since January as he played 63 minutes after injury but Mauro Zarate struck for the Hammers on 27 minutes to cancel out Dodoo's goal.
The hosts went ahead on six minutes thanks to a cool finish by Dodoo. The 20-year-old pounced with a first-time shot from the edge of the area after Pedro Obiang's attempted clearance rebounded off Andrej Kramaric into his path.
Dodoo had another great chance after Ulloa combined well with Marc Albrighton on the left. This time the youngster's shot was deflected wide by defender James Collins.
So it was against the run of play that the visitors drew level through Zarate with the aid of some misfortune for Leicester defender Marcin Wasilewski, who deflected the Argentine's shot past helpless keeper Mark Schwarzer.

Leicester maintained the pressure as King's close-range header was blocked by Obiang with Leonardo Ulloa unable to snaffle the rebound.
Ulloa was then denied by a fantastic Adrian save after meeting King's cross with a glancing header and the keeper flew to his left soon afterwards to keep out a Fuchs free-kick.
Leicester dominated in extra-time with Hammers keeper Adrian saving twice from Jeffrey Schlupp and once from fellow substitute Riyad Mahrez.
But the Hammers could have had a penalty when captain Mark Noble was booked harshly for diving following a clumsy challenge by Danny Simpson.
The Foxes finally broke through with four minutes remaining when King produced a perfect header from a Fuchs cross to seal the tie.
