The diminutive Spaniard levelled home from the spot with aplomb after United conceded an early goal.
Mata also had a hand in the winner as he flicked the ball to allow Chris Smalling to turn home from close range.
And the Spaniard admits his confidence is sky high at the moment.
"The manager made a list of penalty takers and I am the first right now and I have confidence," Mata told BT Sport.
"We knew we had to win today. We are happy today."
Mata also explained how delighted he was United picked up three points, adding: "It was a very tough game because we were physically tired at the end.
"But we did what we had to do."
