Roberto Martinez has hailed Swansea boss Garry Monk |
ROBERTO MARTINEZ has hailed Swansea manager Garry Monk as the most influential manager in the Premier League over the past three seasons.
The Everton manager returns to his former club on Saturday and will come up against Monk, whom Martinez made his captain during his own time in charge at Swansea.
Monk took over the manager’s job in February 2014 and Martinez marvelled at the job he has done in fending off relegation that season and then leading Swansea to a record points tally in the Premier League last term.
Swansea have drawn with Chelsea and beaten Manchester United already this season and Martinez said: “I am a big admirer of what Garry Monk has done at Swansea.
“I don’t see another manager who has had as big an influence over the last three seasons in taking different roles.
“Having to stabilise the team, giving them direction to avoid relegation and then finishing that season in Europe that was very challenging.
“Then having a full season and achieving their best ever finish in the Premier League and then now having such a strong start to the campaign with different personnel.
“It has been a very, very impressive job that Garry Monk is doing and when you see the team playing it has a strong philosophy, but is flexible at the same time, and one that is always competitive.
“I think Swansea deserved to beat Manchester United in their last game and that speaks volumes for where they are and where they can go.
“You feel that with Garry there, there are many, many good things that can arrive for Swansea.”
Everton will give late checks to Seamus Coleman and Mo Besic, who both suffered hamstring injuries in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Chelsea.
